As part of the University of Sarajevo's official celebrations for March 1, Bosnian and Herzegovinian Independence Day, we are pleased to announce a public lecture by academic Rusmir Mahmutćehajić on "The Future of the State and Political Responsibility.”

The lecture will take place at 13:00 hours on 25 February 2020, at the Great Hall of the Rectorate of the University of Sarajevo.

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s independence as the state is an expression of her people’s most exalted ideal. Consciousness of the ideal is never identical with reality and consequently evokes a feeling of responsibility on the part of the individual and of society towards self and others. It entails a responsibility to change reality in line with that ideal. If the ideal ceases to be clear and attractive, it produces disorder and disorientation, fear and discontent. How shall we render our Bosnian and Herzegovinian ideal clear and convincing? How shall we attract our fellow citizens to commit to it and so to responsibility for themselves and for their future? How shall we make of it a reason for believing in a Bosnian and Herzegovinian future and for committing to building it? Academician Rusmir Mahmutćehajić will discuss these and related questions of Bosnia and Herzegovina's present and future.

Rusmir Mahmutćehajić is a scientist, philosopher, author, and politician of international reputation. A direct witness to and participant in the most dramatic events related to advocating for, bringing about, and defending Bosnia and Herzegovina's national sovereignty, he was involved in them as an already established scientist, scholar, and intellectual. Immediately prior to and during the war against Bosnia, he exercised the offices of Deputy Prime Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Chair of the Council for Social Activities, Vice-president of the Committee for the Referendum on National Independence, and Minister for Energy, Mining, and Industry in the Government of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. After the war, he focused on pursuing his interests in a range of academic areas: political philosophy, the philosophy of religion, the philosophy of science, political pluralism in Bosnia, amongst others. His works in these and other fields have been published widely, both in the country and around the world. He has lectured widely on a range of issues of importance for the contemporary world and Bosnia's place in it.

Rusmir Mahmutćehajić is a member of the editorial committee for the philosophy of religions and world religions at Brill, one of the most prestigious publishers in the world, and a member of the Royal Institute for Islamic Thought in Jordan. He received the Star of Jordan, first class, (wisām al-kawkab al-urdunī min al-daraja al-ūlā) from King Abdullah II for his contributions to scholarship. He had previously received 6 April award, alongside Francis R. Jones and Dževad Hozo for their bibliophilic edition of Kameni spavač/Stone Sleeper, and the Svjetlost annual award for prose published in Život.
